Effective April 1st 2021, the city of Santa Cruz will ban all thrift shops from operation. Statistics show a 420 increase in Covid-19 cases resulting from secondhand item purchases in the last month, despite decreasing overall cases in the county. With the increasing tension following thrift store safety protocols, and the recent community outrage of a young boy being attacked r due to an illegal mini cleaver purchase at the popular Thrift Center on Water St, this new ban was voted 5-0 by the Board of Supervisors to shut down all thrift shops indefinitely.
