On Thursday, President Donald Trump’s press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders made waves by using the phrase “countless unfathomable things” in asking reporters to categorize what were seemingly contradictory statements by the commander in chief. The problem is, the president himself has admitted he does not trust Sanders, either.
According to Michael Schmidt, a former senior advisor to President Obama, White House communications director Sarah Huckabee Sanders has a job to do (and which probably has a hairtrigger temper), and she does not need the help of the president to do it.
"It’s easy to see how it’s hard for her to realize that she can’t go so far off script and say the wrong thing at the wrong time," Schmidt wrote. "But there was a point in Donald Trump’s presidency when he was willing to say whatever he wanted to -- and what you could hear as reporters went to question him was the realization that he wasn’t getting the information he wanted."
“Those missteps were so huge that he just couldn’t take that kind of criticism anymore," he continued. "As we’ve seen over the past several years -- perhaps most notably with Steve Bannon -- firing people or labeling people as fakers is a surefire way to make headlines, sell books, and even get on some very good TV shows."
Schmidt is correct when he writes that firing and stating the wrong thing at the wrong time do not work for Trump.
“It’s very important that the president be driven by process and consistent messaging," Schmidt added. "This isn’t any sort of managerial ability, but a refusal to let reality set itself -- much less anything as basic as the intelligence he needs to get information -- is a very weak strategic tool."
