The De Leon City Council, in its last meeting on Tuesday, unanimously voted to remove the asphalt on most city streets and go back to dirt roads, which they say will be easier and cheaper to maintain. The City made their decision after paying $240,000 to New York consulting firm Ben Dover and Associates to study the long term feasibility of such a move. Continuous budget deficits and the cost of high salaries to City employees prompted the move. Most streets have not been repaved since the late 1960s and are the cause of countless damage to vehicles.
The City Council plans to vote next month on the purchase of a new Caterpillar excavator for removal of the asphalt. Cost is expected to be around $230,000. Another consulting firm will be retained to determine the costs of caliche road surfacing after the asphalt is removed.
Mayor Terry Scott stated that once the pavement is removed, many residents may prefer using horse and buggy for their daily transportation and encouraged doing so to minimize dust.
