Due to many illegal immigrants of refugees from Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and Syria, the two EU members Germany and Portugal have decided to get out from the common Schengen area. The exit will take place on the 1st Ausgust 2019. From this date, there is no longer any freedom of travel for EU citizens and again border checks will take place. Finland considers to exit the Schengen Area on the 1st september. EU citizens are required to show their passport for journeys, ID-cards are no longer accepting from august. A visa is not necessary if the planned stay will not be longer than 180 days.
Non EU citizens who are in germany and Portugal before the 1st August are not affected. But the situation is different for non-EU citizens whose planned date of entry is after 1st August. The Schengen visas lose their validity for Germany and Portugal. After the 1st August, an entry with a Schengen visa is no longer possible. Affected persons are requested to contact the German or Portuguese embassy immediately.
The Foreign Office indicates that a Schengen visa is not valid for the united Kingdom.
